How embers works with Hetzner
Every provider is a little different. Here’s exactly what to expect with Hetzner.
Buckets with versioning turned on use Hetzner’s own versions. Others use copies embers keeps in a hidden folder in the bucket.
Signed links that last up to 7 days. For links you can revoke early, use embers’ protected links, with a password or a download limit.
Hetzner doesn’t offer Object Lock to embers, so write-once retention isn’t available here.
- The same credentials reach Falkenstein, Nuremberg and Helsinki; embers finds buckets in all of them.
- Hetzner copies server-side only inside one bucket, so copying between buckets streams through embers and counts toward your Hetzner egress.
Connect Hetzner to embers
embers uses S3 credentials from your Hetzner project.
- In the Hetzner Console, open your project, then Security → S3 credentials and choose Generate credentials.
- Copy the Access key and Secret key; Hetzner shows the secret only once.
- In embers, open the Hetzner tab, click Connect account, paste both and pick a location for new buckets.
Tick Save to my embers account to stay connected on every device; saved keys are sealed with AES-256-GCM. To stop access, disconnect in embers and delete the key in Hetzner.

embers and Hetzner, answered
Do my files pass through embers?
No. Uploads, downloads, previews and share links go straight between your browser (or phone) and Hetzner Object Storage. embers signs the requests with your key and never stores your files. The one exception on Hetzner is copying between two buckets, which Hetzner can’t do server-side, so it streams through embers.
What does embers need from Hetzner?
S3 credentials from your Hetzner project. Give the key only the access you want embers to have. If you save it to your embers account, it’s sealed with AES-256-GCM.
Does Hetzner charge me anything extra?
embers adds nothing to your Hetzner Object Storage bill: no markup and no per-GB fees from us. Your storage and transfer are billed by Hetzner at their normal rates.
Can I use Hetzner with other providers?
Yes. Connect any of the 15 providers embers supports, each on its own tab, and copy files or move whole buckets between them.
